This dance form specially focusses on vigorous foot-work performed with ghunghroos, along with the multiple turns or chakkars. In the upper-body, focus is on straight lines, delicate wrist and neck movements along with subtle and graceful expressions. A major aspect in learning the dance form is the knowledge of taal (rhythmic cycles) and laya (tempo). As you delve deeper into the practice, the compositions become more complex and intricate, sometimes with multiple layas (tempos) within the same composition, or with pauses and claps with the precision of a fraction of a second, breaking the dance. It is often this complexity of rhythmic patterns and precision that makes kathak, on the one hand, challenging on every level, and on the other hand, addictive!
