The Difference Between Knowledge & Intelligence Posted By Annalakshmi

The Difference Between Knowledge & Intelligence
The 11th president of our country, Dr.Abdul Kalam had a special message to the young people of the country: “… to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed. These are great qualities that they must work towards. This is my message to the young people.” Our country is one of the few that allows for the uneducated to be able to run in the elections. While this sounds great on paper, the real life applications of it are not always successful. Only an educated mind can tackle the issues that a country faces on such a grand scale.  What Does Educated Mean?

It does not mean having an MBA from a reputed school. That is only knowledge. Real education cultivates intelligence. But our education system produces beautiful parrots.  Children who excel at repeating back what is written in textbooks word for word, instead of applying their minds and thinking about things from different perspectives. Nor do many of the teachers encourage individual thought. Why, is our education system and our society so afraid of/against producing individuals? With the quality of students being produced by our educations system, today, it is unlikely the system will change anytime soon. But, as parents, you can take the responsibility upon yourself to make sure your child is brought up to be intelligent, not knowledgeable.

Cultivate Intelligence
How can you, as parents, raise intelligent little people who might be capable of changing the face of the country tomorrow? If the school system is flawed and they must go through it, what can you do to combat this bleak situation?  Starting from a young age, expose your children to all the activities and hobbies there are.  Do not overburden them, but allow them the freedom to explore everything that peaks their curiosity. In doing this, you will be ensuring proper development of their whole brain.  Activities to stimulate the left side, right side and the mid-brain personality development, and others.  Let them question everything and do not obstruct their learning because you are tired or stressed.  Remember, you chose to bring them into this world, which means you have a responsibility to raise intelligent children - emotionally intelligent and academically.   By being supportive and encouraging you will be developing the blueprints from which they will learn to form long lasting bonds in relationships.  By showing these traits yourself, they too will become people capable of being supportive and encouraging in the future in both their careers and lives.

If you are asking yourselves, why is all this important.  In the wise words of our ex-president, “Life is a difficult game. You can win it only by retaining your birthright to be a person”.  And with the way things are going today, we don’t have enough people claiming this basic right, but instead being slaves to a system, a system that has created people who cannot think for themselves, but following blindly the orders given.  So create individuals, capable of thinking and dreaming. Dreams they can make into a reality.
